Greg and Cathy in the Okanagans, British Columbia

No more whiteout

Cathy cruising on great snow

Big improvement in the weather today – overcast, occasional sun and unlimited visibility. Got to the top of the mountain and took some photos of the famous Big White snow ghosts. These are pine trees completely covered by snow with no trace of the tree to bee seen. We had amazing views of the resort and surrounding mountains.

The skiing was so much better when you could see the terrain ahead. There is no man made snow here and the grooming is immaculate. We really burnt our legs out today and will definitely give the hot tub a nudge tonight.

More of the same today – brilliant snow quality and limited visibility. Now we are a bit more familiar with the mountain we coped much better with the conditions. We accidentally went down a black run called “Goats Kick” which turned out to be quite steep with huge bumps. I tried to encourage Cathy to hit one of the kickers and get some air but I think there was some swearing in her response. Of course it was my fault for being on the run in the first place.

We skied home for lunch and had a nanna nap before venturing out again. The clouds lifted for a while this afternoon and we were able to see a bit of the mountain.

Had an outdoor hot tub to soothe the aching muscles and are riding the gondola tonight to a posh restaurant.  Now we are over the jet lag we are really starting to enjoy the holiday.

Big Whiteout

Our accommodation - Chateau Big White at night

Glad to finally get here after a long trip. Our room is great – ski in / ski out and really cozy. There has been a lot of new snow and the powder is dry and fantastic to ski on. The main difficulty we had on our first adventure onto the mountain was lack of visibility. You can probably see from the photos that you really can’t see far at all. We couldn’t see where we were skiing and had no sensation of how steep the runs were or how fast we were going. Lucky the snow quality was great which made survival much easier. We got lost on every run and eventually had to retreat to our room. Hopefully the weather will clear tomorrow.

The journey begins

🙂 Leaving on 12th January 2011 – stay tuned 😛
